Permalinks
Permalinks are a crucial part of generating the best possible rankings via search engines such as Google when a potential customers is searching for the products/services your business provides. The above video explains what permalinks are and how to ensure you are creating the best possible rankings for your website.
After watching the video follow each step below.
Section 1
Creating Permalinks
When creating a permalink for a page on your website make sure it contains the main keyword you are trying to target, is short and natural.
For example if your business offers solar panel cleaning in Chatswood I would recommend the permalink be something like solar-panel-cleaning-chatswood

Permalink Checklist
Follow these simple guidelines when setting up permalinks on your website:
- Keep it short and readable – avoid long titles, numbers, and unnecessary words. For example: Good:
/solar-panel-cleaning| Bad:/how-to-clean-your-solar-panels-in-2025-without-damaging-them - Use lowercase letters only in your permalink.
- Use hyphens (–) instead of underscores (_) to separate words.
- Include your main keyword so search engines can quickly understand what the page is about.
- Remove unnecessary “stop words” such as “and”, “the”, “to”, and “for” unless they are essential.
- Check for duplicates – every permalink must be unique or WordPress will add “-2” (and higher) to the URL.
Perfect Permalink Formula
Use this simple structure when creating a new permalink:
/main-keyword-secondary-keywordExample:
/pergola-installation-melbourneIf You Must Change a Permalink
If you absolutely need to change an existing permalink, follow these steps to avoid losing traffic or confusing search engines:
- Create a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new URL.
- Update all internal links on your website that point to the old URL.
- Check Google Search Console for any crawl errors or broken links after the change.
